Sustainable fashion or slow fashion, is slowly gaining momentum with the increased awareness about the repercussions of fast fashion on the environment. There have been a handful of well-known designers who have already ventured towards this path and a millennial crop of designers too are creating eco-friendly designs.

In the recently concluded “South Indian Fashion Awards 2018” (SIFA) held in Chennai, well-known Hyderabad based designer Asmita Marwa won the Trendsetter in Fashion. SIFA is a platform that recognizes talent in Fashion Design, Photography, Make-up, Modeling, Blogging and Styling.

Marwa is eponymous with sustainable clothing and has been pioneering this change since the conception of her label in 2003. She has an impressive list of Celebrity clients and is a name to reckon with in the fashion industry.

Marwa’s collection at SIFA 2018 was an ode to the Bohemian spirit. From muted tones to bright hues, models strutted down the runway with roses and baby’s breath in their hair, flowy dresses, and tops to fun sharara pants. Showstopper Bindu Madhavi, Tamil and Telugu actress gave us a vibe of Frieda Kahlo and people couldn’t take eyes from her.

Unlike fast fashion, sustainable fashion does not follow any season. The collection never goes out of trend. What is commendable about Marwa’s work is that she does not let anything go into waste. The scraps from the fabrics are utilized in her collection creating patchworks and statement accessories.

Marwa is a member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). She has participated in Lakme India Fashion Week and Fashion Week in Goa since 2008 and 2011 respectively. Marwa was invited to show her “Zero Waste” collection at the Global Sustainable Fashion Week, held in Budapest, Hungary in 2016. She was also featured as a “Promising Talent to Watch Out For” by Vogue.
