This year, with its 40th-anniversary celebration, this Italian mega-brand, Dolce And Gabbana, happens to be a testimony to the ageless appeal and exuberance of Italian craftsmanship towards la dolce vita, by the hands of Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce. From its modest start in 1984, the brand has grown into one of the most thriving and recognizable Italian fashion houses, with annual revenues of over €1.6 billion. Known for its unbridled Sicilian inspiration, decadent lingerie, and impeccably crafted suits, the brand has been at the forefront of a particular aesthetic movement that has redefined international fashion.

The Genesis of an Icon: Dolce And Gabbana

The brand’s journey started with a dream that Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce shared, brought together by their love for fashion and a deep respect for the Italian heritage. Dolce was born and raised in Sicily. Therefore, this rich cultural heritage found its place in the brand through this man, combining the radiant colors, traditions, and landscapes of the island. Typical for this brand, and from now on making repeated use of heavy lace, floral patterns, and religious iconography, were to become typical for this brand.

Since its inception, the brand has focused clearly on femininity and aspects of sensuality. Their early collections featured celebration of the female body through such means as corsets, lingerie-inspired dresses, and figure-hugging silhouettes evoking confidence and allure. This was sufficient to give way to a bold line of designs that quickly earned the brand’s attention as one not to be trifled with in the fashion world.

Dolce & Gabbana: A Brand That Broke The Market

Making History

One of the most defining elements of success is its adherence to craftsmanship. Dolce And Gabbana’s designs originate from painstaking attention to detail, where every piece represents the skill and art of Italian artisans. Domenico Dolce, who since he was a young child has grown up in his father’s tailor shop, has absorbed subtleties from fabric to pattern to construction, has expressed this keen interest in the handmade as the very heart of Dolce And Gabbana’s philosophy.

“From the Heart to the Hands” Celebrates 40 Years

Dolce & Gabbana marks its 40th anniversary with an exhibit at Milan’s Palazzo Reale. Simply titled “From the Heart to the Hands,” the showcase is an encyclopedic look at the brand’s Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria, and Alta Gioielleria collections latter of which debuted just last summer. Over 100 pieces are on view. From sumptuous robes with crystals, and incredibly decorative headgear to jackets sporting 3D-quilted cherubs, they’re all housed in 10 rooms themed around the founders’ Italian passions: the handmade, folklore, art and architecture, opera, and ballet.

For Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce, the exhibition is a “love letter to Italian culture,” which celebrates the many influences that have shaped their work over the years. From the art and architecture of its ancient cities to the diverse traditions of each region, every aspect of Italian culture has played a part in shaping the brand’s identity.

The Secret to Longevity

By the end of the interview, Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce reflect on how the brand can have such a long life. For them, it means keeping hold of where their roots are while innovating continuously. “There are no secrets or magic formulas, just a lot of love and dedication to work, which is our life. It is important to have something to tell and strong roots. Through our collections, we have always told the world who we are and where we come from.”

Another reason it can also be considered successful is its ability to transcend fashion and focus on style. Hence, Stefano Gabbana says, “Style is beyond time and trend. At the very core of Italian style is the idea of quality.” Quality and authenticity have made Dolce & Gabbana relevant in a field of continuous change to please their loyal clientele while creating a new breed of consumers for fashion.

Inspiring Future Generations

While Dolce & Gabbana marks its 40th anniversary, it does so not as a fashion brand but as an institution within the culture that has made such an indelible mark on the world of luxury and style. With this full-hearted devotion to craftsmanship, Italian heritage, and the ability to change while standing firmly with its identity,  broke the market. It was the definition that set a new meaning for an icon in the fashion industry.
