Sania and Anam Mirza bring Label Bazaar to Bangalore

Sania and Anam Mirza bring Label Bazaar to Bangalore

Tennis Player Sania Mirza and her sister Anam Mirza are working together to represent the idea of ‘Self Love’ this season. Anam Mirza, who recently married legendary cricketer Mohd. Azharuddin’s son Asad in December also consciously follows her elder sister Sania’s footsteps of self-motivation.  She has been working towards building her Hyderabad based marketing agency, with her business partner, Sania and her four-year-old lifestyle exhibition called Label Bazaar. Label Bazaar will be hosting its 12th Season in Hyderabad and in Bangalore on the 29th of February 2020 overlining the theme of ‘Loving Yourself‘ every day. Sania who is back on the court after taking a maternity break since 2017, is championing her first win at Hobart International. Sania will be joining the growing tribe of tennis-playing mothers who have returned to the game after childbirth. This comes from sheer perseverance and passion for the sport and for fitness. Her ideology of loving and nurturing yourself has made her an icon for all working mothers in the country. Sania and Anam Mirza speak to thestyle.world about fitness, sisterhood and more. Sania Mirza You’re back on the court after a break and already championing your first win at Hobart International. You’re the growing tribe of tennis-playing mothers who have returned to the game after childbirth. How challenging was it and what kept you going? Making a comeback isn’t easy for anyone. There’s so much more pressure and so many more eyes on you with all these expectations. It was much more challenging because your body plays such an important role in the sports you play, and my body underwent so many changes during my pregnancy. What I realised is that there’s no right time for a comeback and when it felt right, I just did it. My love for what I do, is what really kept me going. What role do you play at Label Bazaar? How do you juggle between your sport, family, kid, social life and Label Bazaar? Any tips for others? I am the brand ambassador of the Label Bazaar. Even though it is like family because it’s my own sisters venture, I would still love to be associated with it simply because it’s a brand that I believe in and I believe that they are changing the whole affordable fashion game by curating a mix of upcoming and runway designers in so many cities. I am lucky that I have a very supportive family and a great team that help me multitask at being an athlete, mother, brand associations and my personal life. What is your fitness and beauty regime? Anam Mirza How has life changed after marrying Asad? How did you celebrate Valentine’s Day recently? Any love/romance tips for others who look up to you both as an ideal couple? Life remains the same pretty much. I have to go to work and still have the same errands to run. It’s just that I am living in a different house and I have to juggle in between two houses now. That’s probably the only major difference I am having as of now. Asad and I have known each other for a couple of years, and we got married within nine months’ time after our engagement. Our families have known each other for a long time, and everything happened very organically. So, there was nothing major for me to adjust as such. For Valentine’s Day, I was in Bangalore while Asad was in Hyderabad. Although, he did bring me flowers when I got home, which I think was pretty sweet. Honestly, I am not so big on Valentine’s Day, as I personally think love should be celebrated every day. One thing I am very sure works out for every marriage, and I am sure a lot of people will agree with me on this is that there should be transparency and honesty in the relationship. You should take time out for each other as much as possible, no matter how difficult that is. Love does get monotonous, but then it’s all about focusing on the smaller things and appreciating each other for the little things in life. How do you maintain a work – life balance with your marketing agency and your four-year-old lifestyle exhibition Label Bazaar and your personal life? Some tips for other women out there? I start work around 10.30-11.00 am and come back around 7.00 and then I head to the gym or go for a swim. Most of my days are spent like that. The only way of balancing this out is planning your days ahead and having a timeline set for yourself. One thing I would really encourage everyone to do is to try to wake up a little earlier and spend some time with your family. Life does get a little hectic but it’s manageable. Label Bazaar is hosting its 12th Season with the love theme. How is it different from your previous exhibitions? What can everyone expect? Label Bazaar was started four years ago. I started it when I was in college because I wanted to get a certain kind of outfits which was not available in Hyderabad. When I think of it, I literally started it to make fashion accessible to me and then it just started getting bigger and move to bigger cities and now I can proudly say that we are 12th season down! Every season is different from each other. When we pick clothes or designers, we have a certain checklist that we follow. Infact, we choose most of our clothes considering if we ourselves would buy them or not.  This time, we are bringing ‘Experimental fashion’ to Bangalore as we believe that Bangalore is a lot more experimental in their fashion as compared to a Hyderabad. The designers we have on board this time are very experimental in nature and have a fresh approach towards their clothes, which I am sure that Bangalore hasn’t seen before. How do you both complement each other at

Actor Amol Palekar Raises Funds for a Cause with his Play Kusur

Actor Amol Palekar Raises Funds for a Cause with his Play Kusur

“Kusur” begins on a rainy night, when retired Assistant Police Commissioner Dandavate volunteers his service at a police control room. As the hours go by, anonymous residents of Mumbai seek help. The night presents us with a series of twists and turns while the end unearths the truth in a way that leaves us holding our breath. When Dandavate exits that control room, he says “I am indebted to this night … good intentions alone don’t absolve us of our sins. Thank you, Kaveri, for helping me realise this!” The taut plot with its minimalist setting gradually unravels this mystery. The elaborate sound design is a vital character in itself, disturbing our complacency and overturning our assumptions. While excavating the rich subtext, the audience isn’t permitted to be a mere distant, passive onlooker. The “Mistake” takes theatre lovers on a claustrophobic and thrilling, yet emotional and immersive journey. This theatrical experience is one to linger on, way beyond the curtain drop. The play has been directed by Amol Palekar and Sandhya Gokhale and is adapted from the film “Den Skyldige” written by Gustav Moller and Emil N Anderson, by Sandhya Gokhale, who has given her own novel touch to the entire script. Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar has been in the fore front of serving the community for over three decades and has helped in catering to the needs of society by arranging blood donation camps, free eye surgeries, subsidised heart surgeries, palliative care at KARUNASHRAYA, a 75 bed FREE facility for terminally ill cancer patients and many more. They are now proposing to equip Jayadeva Hospital with a Cath lab at a cost of approximately 4 crores which will be partly funded by Rotary Bangalore Indiranagar and the major portion of the cost would come in as a Global Grant from The Rotary Foundation. The Cath Lab will help in reducing number of open heart surgeries, as it will provide corrective procedure with minimum invasion. The proceeds of this play will be utilised towards building the Cath Lab at Jayadeva Hospital. We speak to Amol Palekar on his journey and his other passions. How did the play come about? Amol: The script of this play was Sandhya’s birthday present to me on November 24. This is the 18th time we are staging this play. We have taken it to many cities including Kankavli, Delhi, Chandigarh, Assam, Guwahati, Bhubaneswar, Ahmedabad and other cities. My character Ashok Dandavate is a 75-year old retired, upright, straightforward assistant commissioner of police. I’m playing my age in this play. I really liked the script and it has been directed by both Sandhya and me. You have always been known to get into the character that you play. How challenging is it to be on the stage at the age of 75? Amol: Throughout my career I have tried to bring a believable quality to my character. I try to make the character non-obtrusive. I don’t want Amol Palekar to remembered. I want the character to be remembered. Yet, funnily, in most of my films, people remember Amol Palekar, not the character. I come from a school where director is the ultimate. I fulfil his vision. I was privileged to work with every top director and technician in the country and learnt so much from them. Now, at the age of 75, to retain the physical energy is demanding. It is also tough because, a gap of 25 years is a hell of a lot. It took quite an effort for me to brush away the rust. Also, most of the audience that comes to see our performance, knows me only through my film characters, therefore, for them to see me as an actor on the stage is also challenging and exciting. Tell us more about other passions – painting and acting. Amol: I have always been active in all the three spaces that I’ve dabbled in – films, theatre and painting. I continued to pursue all three of my passions simultaneously. I was holding my art exhibitions, even while I was acting on stage and also shooting for films. So, I would say, my journey has been very vibrant. When I turned 70, five years back, I went back to my first love, painting. Today, I’m primarily a painter. My second love is theatre and I will do 25 performances of this play. This one in Bangalore is our 18th performance. I would get back to films, only if there is something very exciting, challenging and something that really touches my heart, but certainly not as a routine, just to make a comeback. I like to try something which I haven’t tried, even if there’s an inherent risk in it. I have always done that.” You have acted in regional cinema also, besides making a mark in Hindi cinema. Tells us more about the experience. Amol: I have acted in Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu and other languages. I have always believed in regional cinema. Infact, when I got the Malayalam film offer, I told Balu Mahendra when I was acting in Olangal, that even if he were to direct a film in Hebrew, I would learn Hebrew and do it. I’m not the ones who believe that if they have made a name in Hindi cinema, they should not look at other languages. How open are you to criticism? Amol: I’m open to criticism and like to learn from it to help me better my performance. I have the biggest critic at home (he smiles). In Marathi there’s a saying, the biggest critic should be your neighbour. I don’t even have to wait to meet my neighbour. My wife Sandhya’s analysis and comments not only keep me on my toes, but also help me improve. We may argue, have a fight, but ultimately, I know her criticism is without any malice and it is completely with love and affection towards me and my work. Once you’re sure of that, you cannot be anything else,

French Street Food at its best

French Street Food at its best

“Le Casse-Croute”, a single food-truck driving all around Bangalore serving a small selection of toasted sandwiches and French fries, is now Paris Panini. When Nicolas Grossemy started missing his French street food back home, he started experimenting at home with local ingredients and soon started Le Casse-Croute with the idea of bringing fresh, quality and affordable French food to Bangalore. With the boom and bust of food trucks, he decided to call it a day and after meeting fellow restaurateurs Nikhil and AB of The Pizza Bakery, started serving gourmet quality food using fresh ingredients. The place is cozy yet chic, airy and vibrant, with the Eiffel Tower wallpaper at the far end, adding a Parisian touch. The menu has 10 vegetarian and non-vegetarian panini (toasted sandwiches). Those paninis are made of a bread that is daily baked inhouse. Very soft inside, and with a small crust outside which comes while toasting the bread. All their sauces are prepared inhouse too, from raw ingredients, fresh vegetables, fresh basil leaves to make pesto, egg yolk for mayonnaise, raw potato to make double cooked French fries or homemade French style mashed potato. They also serve an authentic ratatouille, onion rings made with inhouse breadcrumbs, caramel cream, and a live crepe station for fresh, delicious crispy crepes! Try their in-house drink which is comparable to the famous Ricard or Pastis in France (without alcohol), or wash all the freshly baked panini dough down with fresh juices, gourmet coffee and teas. You get the vibes of sitting in a Parisian café, when you’re here. Nicolas Grossemy says, “For me interacting with people is one of the keys of the personal success, it makes you stronger listening to other’s ideas and it opens your mind meeting people from different backgrounds. Then it became like an obsession to start my restaurant or something in the food industry. I had this passion for cooking for very long time and I actually became addicted meeting new people and seeing people’s smiles after a meal. This satisfaction excited me and excite me every day while working. That’s something I could not live without so after finishing my studies I decided to start this startup called Le Casse-Croûte (now Paris Panini), to introduce Homemade & Fresh French food to Bangaloreans!” Where: Paris Panini, 12th Main Indiranagar, Bangalore.
