Born in the midst of Physical Distancing, the newest Rotary Club in the city, Rotary Bangalore Social, had a virtual installation recently. RBS is the first club worldwide to do so. In another first, 60 percent of its members are women, including its first President Rtn. Sandhya Mendonca.  Vandita Sharma, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner, Government of Karnataka, was the chief guest at the E-Installation event held on Zoom. She expressed gratitude on behalf of the government to non-governmental organisations that are helping in COVID- 19 relief and hailed the work of the Rotary Clubs. “It’s great that the new Club is being installed in the midst of the pandemic and that it’s headed by a woman. I am happy to note that 60 per cent of the members are women, it’s not no in the government where women are probably 30-32 percent and even less in the civil services”, she said. The Club belongs to Rotary District 3190 which has 130 Rotary Clubs with 5,200 members under its aegis. Rtn. Dr. Sameer Hariani, District Governor, said, “Rotary Bangalore Social is the 5th New Jewel to establish itself in Rotary District 3190 during RY 2019-20. The unique identity of this club is that it was formed, created, oriented and chartered entirely on the virtual platform. We are proud that Rotary Bangalore Social is now part of the family of RI District 3190”. He added that in the first four weeks of the pandemic, Rotary District 3190 had contributed Rs.12 crore worth of relief and put in 884.1 million volunteer hours. Rtn. Sandhya Mendonca, Charter President of the club, said, “It is a privilege to be elected to this position and a rare honour to be the charter president. We are an urban club and will focus on initiating projects that will have an impact in Bengaluru in the areas of Health, Hunger and Literacy, and gender equality will be at the centre of everything we do. Our members are accomplished professionals in the fields of medicine, technology, law, finance, advertising, media, retail, education, architecture, hospitality, social sector and more, and we hope that our combined expertise will deliver significant value. Many of our members are already working on community welfare projects in their individual capacities and we hope to pool our resources and scale the service we can render.” Says , the moving force behind the club, who has been a Rotarian for several years and had chartered a club in the US earlier in 2002, “My intention was to bring together like-minded people and I was clear from the start that there should be gender parity and place Rotary as a younger person’s club. The youngest is 27 and the oldest 55. I think this is the fastest Rotary Club ever to be formed; from idea to charter, it took us just 2.5 months. This can happen only when everyone rallies around a good idea.” The number of women members in the Rotary Clubs in the district is at 14 percent, and there has been a concerted effort to induct more women into the clubs in the recent past. Women head 17 clubs in the district and Rotary Bangalore Social has the distinction of starting off by ticking both boxes: more women members and a woman president. A wholesome meal and a scotch cocktail to go with it from the comfort of your own home. What else can one ask for? Here’s a chef’s special Goan fish curry and rice recipe to try at home. To compliment this meal, a beautiful Black & White cocktail that makes for a great brunch [or lunch] serve. Black & White Spritzer Ingredients Black & White Scotch whisky 45 ml Orange juice 20 ml Fresh lime juice 15 ml Ginger ale 90 ml Method Add fresh lime juice, orange juice & whisky into the glass Add ice stir well and top t up with ginger ale Garnish it with orange zest Tomato Rice This is an ideal recipe to use leftover rice in a delicious manner, with the most minimal and basic ingredients. Ingredients -: Refined oil: 2 tablespoons Black Mustard seeds: 1 tsp Methi (fenugreek) seeds: 1/2 tsp Whole dry red chilies: 3 pc Curry leaves: 10 pc Chopped tomatoes: 4 nos. Red chili powder: 1/4 tsp Whole black pepper: 1/2 tsp Salt: to taste Method -: * Heat oil well for 2 to 3 minutes. * Add the mustard seeds and let them splitter * Now add Methi seeds, whole red chilies and curry leaves and sauté for a minute * Add chopped tomatoes, salt, black pepper and red chili powder and sauté well for 3 to 4 minutes on low flame * Add the rice. Sauté well. Check seasoning and serve hot. * You can serve this with dals, or light curries. * Stay safe. Stay home and wash your hands. Goan Fish Curry Ingredients-: Fish: 1 kg cut into pieces (I used bekti). Marinate this with the juice of one lime, salt and a pinch of turmeric for 15 minutes. Kashmiri red chilies / ordinary red chilies: 10 pc. (Soaked in water for 15 mins). Red chili powder: 2 tsp. Turmeric powder: 1 tsp. Chopped fresh coconut: 1/2 cup. Coriander seeds: 4 tsp. Chopped onion: 1 pc. Sliced onion: 1 pc. Cumin seeds: 1 pc. Sliced garlic: 5 cloves. Tamarind water: 1/2 cup. Tomato purée: 2 pc. Green chilies slit: 1 pc. Coconut milk: 1 cup. Salt: to taste Method -: Take a blender and grind the chilies, red chili powder, fresh coconut, Coriander seeds, chopped onion, turmeric powder, garlic, cumin seeds and water to make a smooth paste. Heat oil in a pan and sauté the sliced onions till they are golden brown. Add the spice paste and sauté for 6 to 8 minutes. Once the oil begins to separate from the paste add 5 cups of water, salt, tomato puree, green chilies and cook for another 6 to 8 minutes. After 6 minutes, add the fish and let it cook for 4 minutes. Taste and see if you want to add coconut milk or not. I add the coconut milk according to how tangy I want my curry to be. Add the coconut milk and let the fish cook for another 4 minutes. Five tips for mental well-being

How does one stay sane in pressing situations? Life is always throwing us some or the other, and we feel as though we are always drowning. So what happens when an unexpected pandemic hits us and the entire world at the same time? Where the life you once knew does not exist anymore? Here are some ways you can deal with anxiety and maintain mental happiness when you feel thrown out of your comfort zone: Continue a routine that feels familiar: We may not have access to the foods we want or the people we want to meet, but the one thing we have is a familiar routine. Continue to follow the routine you always have, so it gives you a sense of comfort. If you are in the familiarity of your home, you will feel more at ease. If you are not, follow the old routine you used to follow and you will get used to the new space you are in. Focus your attention on hobbies/ passions/ something you could never do: An idle mind is a devil’s workshop. It is essential for you to focus your nervous/ anxious energy on something we enjoy. This could be a hobby, reading a book, watching a documentary, cooking, gardening, or anything that brings you peace and joy. Even if you are in a small space, find something valuable to do for one hour of your day. Gratitude journal: This method has been tried and tested and has worked wonders with people! When we focus our energy on noticing the positives in our life, that part of our life tends to grow. Similarly, when we focus on the negative, we give ‘that’ part of our life fuel to grow too! At the start or end of your day, write 3-5 things that you are grateful for. It can be the smallest of things like good health, to important things like a roof over your head, food to eat, a bank balance, etc. This helps shift your energy in a more positive direction. Meditate: Many struggle with this and even though this is a recommended method for Mental Wellbeing, not everyone can practice it. I would recommend to put on some soothing music from YouTube, close your eyes, and focus on your breathing. By closing your eyes for those few minutes, you are shutting out the world – the outside noise, phone calls, computer/phone screen, and just being with yourself. Each time you get distracted by thoughts, bring your focus back to your breathing. Practice this for a few minutes in a day. Physical movement: It is scientifically proven that during exercise or any physical activity, there are some feel-good hormones like serotonin that are released. So if you’re feeling down, just do a quick 30-minute workout or yoga session. This will really boost those endorphins and automatically lift your mood. Even if you practice this 3 – 4 times a week it’s good enough! Light: If you don’t have access to a garden or a roof, ensure that there is enough natural light in your home. If that is not possible, keep the windows open and ensure that you get some amount of sunlight or outside air. Sitting in a dark room tends to get us down. Light always has uplifting energy and is a mood enhancer. Lighting a candle is also helpful. If any of the above doesn’t work for you, I would recommend setting up an appointment with a healer or counsellor. It is essential for us to take care of our mental well-being during difficult times so that we can be there for our family and friends when THEY need us.
