Loneliness in times of the Coronavirus lockdown

Loneliness in times of the Coronavirus lockdown

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Rohan Solomon is well-known for his role as the front-man of the Delhi-based alt-rock band Cyanide. Rohan recently moved back to the country from New York – with a new trio multi-city trio in place and participation in a Grammy Award Winning track – to the Indian Indie Music Scene and has received a very warm response to his trilogy of track released in 2019 that talk about the growing need to pay heed to the environment, that’s rapidly affecting our living situation. His latest track Keep Holding On, is inspired by the sense of loneliness and uncertainty brought on by the global pandemic Covid-19, which has forced people to stay indoors and socially distant. The song addresses the feelings of exasperation, depression, anxiousness that every one of us is going through, while urging people to keep holding on… (to hope) There will be tomorrow… The video features people from 20 different cities, across nine countries along with artists such as Chezin (Gurgaon, India), Sasha Prendes (New York, USA) and sensation singing TikTok trio The Heichel Sisters (Ohio, USA) among others. The track is sung, composed, produced and mixed by Rohan Solomon and Mastered by Vinnie Pagano (who has worked on a Grammy winning song). The song has a very urban pop feel with a hint of electronic sound. True to Rohan’s style, the track carries a pop chorus and vocal harmony, along with a mixture of electronic drums, synth, live guitars and live percussions. Rohan Solomon is a Singer-Songwriter, Composer, Vocal Coach and Audio Engineer, all rolled into one. Well-known in the Indian Indie Circles as the vocalist of Delhi-based Alt-Rock outfit Cyanide, Rohan started exhibiting his musical abilities at a rather early age. In the era of Channel V Launchpad and the Great Indian Rock Concerts, Cyanide was successful in making its presence felt in significant Indie Rock events of the country, in a short span of time. Rohan moved to New York a few years ago, where he met his soon to be new bandmates – By Chance and the trio of business partners, decided to name themselves after their fortuitous coming together for the love of music. During his time in New York, Rohan also was a part of a Grammy Award winning track called Bubblin by Anderson Paak, in the capacity of an assistant engineer. By Chance released its debut single titled Blue Sky earlier in 2019. The single — a part of a three-song series — as luck would have it, took shape after Rohan returned home to Delhi, and pangs of nostalgia for the Blue Sky and pollution free capital city that he grew up in. All the tracks were recorded in the analogue domain. The second track, called Hard to Breathe, enunciates the reality of living in the city of Delhi, which is now always in the ‘unfit air quality’ category. The track is Rohan’s takeaway from an unpleasant real-life situation. It’s got a Hard Rock/Alternative Rock tonality to it, as also a steady melody with pop chorus harmonies and an aggressive rock feel to it. The significance of this track is to give the listeners a bit of a jolt about the alarming state of air pollution, but the tonality of the pop chorus leaves us with a positive note and an affirmation – there is still hope left. Time – the final track of the trilogy released worldwide on October 10th, 2019, concluding the set, by reiterating the need to take action, ‘NOW’ – to save the world we live in, the environment that nourishes life and the air that we breathe… and be mindful to the fact that the time is in fact running out.Loneliness in times of the Coronavirus lockdown [/vc_column_text][vc_video link=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BehIt7f6P4&feature=youtu.be”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Protect Yourself from Computer Vision Syndrome

Protect Yourself from Computer Vision Syndrome

The current situation does not allow for us to move out as frequently and as necessarily as we used to prior to the lockdown. It is most likely going to continue being like this for a longer time given the current circumstance. At present, one should delay their visit to the Optometrist or Ophthalmologist unless absolutely needed. The same applies to visiting the hospital too. Staying at home is the best solution to contain the spread of the virus. As such taking care of your eyes and your eyewear is necessary. We most often tend to neglect that which is easily available and not expensive; eyewear has become one of those products over the last few years. A lot of people also take sight for granted, as such eye health is often abused. However, taking proper care of your eyes and eyewear at this time will help you avoid any uncomfortable and unnecessary situations. Studies show that the normal blink rate is anywhere between 10-15 times per minute. However, this is reduced to half when using digital devices especially when working on the computer. Also, usage of devices tends to cause more incomplete blinks, so the tear film is not spread across the entire cornea. This leads to screen fatigue or what Optometrists call digital eye strain or computer vision syndrome. How does one recognise computer vision syndrome or digital eye strain? The symptoms are as follows: eye fatigue and discomfort, dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, neck and shoulder pain, eye twitching and red eyes (generally appears because of dryness and eye fatigue). 5 steps to help you recover from or avoid digital eye strain is as follows: Use proper lighting, avoid harsh light or bright light over your work area Minimise glare on computer screens by checking where the reflection is coming from in your surroundings and blocking it. Adjust your computer display setting to match the brightness of the light in your surroundings, change the text size and contrast to what you feel is comfortable and adjust the colour temperature to reduce the harmful blue light emitted from your device. Maintain proper posture; hands in line with your shoulders while using the keyboard and screen in line with your eyes. This will reduce or remove the pain caused in your shoulders and neck. Take at least one 10-minute break every hour. Consciously try to blink more often and if dry eyes persist call your Optometrist to check on easily available lubricants that will assist you with the same. You can even book an online appointment with us and our Optometrist will get in touch with you and guide you as needed. Exercise your eyes by following the 20-20-20 rule which implies for every 20 minutes take a break from your device for 20 secs by directing your gaze 20 feet away from you. If you can’t do this then blink 10 times by closing your eyes like you would when you fall asleep. Do this every 20-30 minutes. Use eyeglasses with protective coatings and lens designs which will help reduce the strain on the eyes and will also cut out the entry of harmful blue light. Consultant your Optician for these solutions. If you have broken your Spectacle Lenses and need a Replacement or have run out of Contact lenses and have no Lens Cleaning Solution, then reach out to us and we will sort you out. Stay home, stay safe. By Hemanth Manay, CEO & Chief Consultant Optometrist, S.R. Gopal Rao Opticians & Optometrists. Protect Yourself from Computer Vision Syndrome

Ideal Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

Ideal Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

As we know there are various skin types and every skin has to be looked after differently. Since, summer has arrived therefore people with oily skin must be worried now! So here is a guide and tips to take care of your oily skin during these months when the mercury levels are rising: CLEANSER: Washing face again and again to get rid of oil is a myth! Washing it too much will only make it produce more oil. Washing your face twice in a day is enough. You may also use a gel-based cleanser that contains sulphuric acid, tea tree oil and glycolic. MOISTURIZER: It’s a myth that you shouldn’t use moisturiser if you have oily skin but it is important to apply moisturiser on your face. Moisturisers don’t add moisture on your face but it actually retains skin moisture and prevents excess water loss on your skin. Use a water soluble, light, non-sticky moisturiser that can be easily absorbed in the skin.  SUNSCREEN: Sunscreen act as protection for your skin and prevents worsening of your skin If you already have acne marks, blemishes, scarring then it’s important to apply sunscreen on your face, whether you’re outdoor or indoor. It protects you from all the harmful effects of UV rays.  STOP TOUCHING YOUR FACE AGAIN AND AGAIN: Touching your face again and again can invite bacteria on your skin which may lead to more acne and irritation. You may use dry tissues to bloat excess oil from the skin.  WATCH OUT YOUR DIET AND STAY HYDRATED: Avoid eating food that may increase oil secretion in the skin like dairy products, white rice, sweets, etc. and drink ample amount of water to keep the skin detoxified. But there are also foods that would help you escape your acne especially foods with low-glycaemic made of complex carbohydrates, for example – whole grains, legumes, unprocessed foods and vegetables etc. PAMPER YOUR SKIN: Use natural ingredients and DIYs to make your skin feel happy. You can make a face mask by mixing 1 egg white with 1 tsp of lemon juice. Apply it on the face until it dries and then wash your face with warm water followed by pat drying. You can also use honey on the skin since it has good anti-bacterial properties and is beneficial for oily and acne prone skin. You may directly apply it on the face and rinse thoroughly with warm water after 10 minutes. By Lalita Arya, Vice President-Dermapuritys. Ideal Skin Care Routine for Oily Skin

Popkast with Garima: Revitalising Indian podcasting with a pop of entertainment

Popkast with Garima: Revitalising Indian podcasting with a pop of entertainment

Podcasting has gone mainstream and the audio industry is literally on a boom! With more than 850K podcasts, the field continues to grow, so will the opportunities for content creators. Popkast with Garima is commissioned by Hubhopper, India’s largest audio platform. The podcast is first interactive pop culture podcast. An unapologetic and badass show, talking about the taboo, breaking the Stree-o-type, opining on everything. From everyday millennial drama to social norms, from 90’s music to all things woke. Hosted by self-proclaimed know-it-all and expert of nothing, PopKast with Garima, ensures that you get your weekly dose of sass and everything that your parents forgot to teach you about life! Garima says, “I started listening to podcasts two years ago that’s when I realised that most podcasts were pretty similar in nature and format – long, loaded with data, and zero audience engagement. I wanted to disrupt the podcast paradigm by still talking about the relevant topics, but in a fun two-way banter with my listeners. On the show I opine on everything millennial, break the Stree-o-type with woke references from pop culture and old Bollywood dialogues. Infact, all episodes on the podcast are names of weird Hindi movies with vintage posters and much nostalgia! Some of the episodes are called Dhoti, Lota Aur Chowpatty, Murde ki Jaan Khatre Mein. There are fun segments where listeners have to guess famous 90’s songs and a whole Popkast playlist to hook on to in the times of Masakali 2.0.” So, basically a podcast revamped and packaged with a lot of dope and sprinkled with sass! Voila! Her latest episode on 420 has sparked conversations across leading news portals and websites. 420 is considered as an occasion for smoking or celebrating the smoking of cannabis. But cannabis is so much more than just smoking the herb. Did you know that? To talk about the same, the episode features a Cannabis activist and Hemp-prenuer gyanning us about the MJ plant and something cool that he is building for the ecosystem – Terraphilic! An expert reveals some uber cool fun facts about India’s history with the plant, it’s medicinal benefits and how this miraculous plant can give us all – Roti, Kapda, Makaan but in the most sustainable fashion. The episode is super fun and a light listen! Hemp’s uses are kaleidoscopic and has innate power to build a better future. From clothes, to using hemp seeds in food – one seed contains 25% more protein and more omega-3 oils than walnuts to pain relief, hemp cooking oil which is better than any oil. Hemp is a great bio-fuel too. Hemp fibre is among the most durable and versatile of all-natural textile fibres. Infact, hemp has even been used to decontaminate soil around the Chernobyl disaster. This nine-thousand-year-old wonder crop of the Himalayas can transform the future but is unfortunately still illegal in India. The episode also draws light on the loopholes that are present in our law regarding cannabis. India has a rich history with the plant, we all know about bhaang, that’s nothing but the flower of the plant. Hemp is definitely the sustainable way forward and it is high time to raise awareness on the same. Garima Surana is a self-proclaimed expert of nothing and loves to talk rant on all things pop. Her podcast, Popkast with Garima – A Hubhopper Original (India’s largest audio platform) is available for streaming on Hubhopper, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher and all other major podcasting platforms as well as on the website. When not scrolling on Instagram, she can be found reading about art and culture. Garima hosts India’s first interactive pop culture podcast. As it is April 2020 also (4-20) Garima, has contributed the third episode to millennials who are developing mixture of hemp hurds and lime, sand, or pozzolans, which is used as a material for construction and insulation. This is called Hempcrete, which is extremely sustainable! The love for 420 in India is silent yet violent types. There are consumers and dedicated ones too!  Link: Episode 3: BOOM: the one that got us high FEAT. Celebrates Jazz Around the World on International Jazz Day

Celebrates Jazz Around the World on International Jazz Day

In celebration, NCPA@home will feature a special Jazz performance by DownBeat Rising Star, Camille Thurman with New York City’s finest trio led by world-renowned drummer, Darrell Green at the NCPA International Jazz Festival ’19 from 6:00-7:00pm on the NCPA Mumbai YouTube Channel. In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of unitinpeople together with legendary jazz pianist and composer, Herbie Hancock. International Jazz Day brings together communities in learning about jazz and its roots along with raising awareness to the dialogues amongst cultures through this international art form recognized as a promotion of peace and freedom of expression. In light of these trying times, the National Centre for the Performing Arts would like to join in this endeavour with an online initiative to bring communities together with a touching tribute to Jazz. These performances will be broadcasted at multiple intervals between April 29 to May 1 on NCPA’s social media platforms taking into account all cities, countries and time zones in hopes of celebrating jazz together all around the world. The artistes who have come together with the NCPA in this global celebration include maestros from India, the United States of America, Italy, Japan, Israel, Netherlands, Germany, London and Singapore amongst other countries. The videos collated feature over 75 artistes from the largest jazz hubs all around the world expressing themselves with intimate home-recordings in this celebration of hope. Jazz remains as it was then; Music promising hope and freedom, an art form which evokes identity and augments the desire to express. As Duke Ellington understood it, Jazz embodied certain ideals of freedom and independence through which it evolved, and according to him, “the music is so free that many people say it is the only unhampered, unhindered expression of complete freedom yet produced”. Online – a New Performance Venue for the Arts

Online – a New Performance Venue for the Arts

International Dance Day is celebrated the world over on April 29. It is a global celebration of dance, created by the Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, the main partner for the performing arts of UNESCO. No one can undermine the effect of a live performance. The experience of alert minds bonding with each other through the arts. A silent exchange of energy, a silent connection giving rise to multiple emotions. A few weeks back this medium suddenly came to a standstill. With the country under lockdown, live performance spaces are closed. Empty stage, vacant seats. But the show must go on. And it did. Every challenge comes with opportunities. NCPA and many such veteran organisations started their online screening from their archival treasures.   As an arts manager at the NCPA, going online has given us the opportunity to add art more to the lives of our audiences. With live shows we were able to only reach out to people who can physically visit our venues but with online we reach out to even that lady who perhaps has never stepped out of her kitchen. My grandmother listened to the radio as she cooked. Those memories of Indian classical music drenched in her mild spices still linger in that space. Growing up her kitchen was no less a space that I connected with good art. An experience dotted with explanations of ragas or stories of wondrous sadhanas of acclaimed artistes as she chopped away. This course into music appreciation was no less for a young mind as mine.  She always missed not being able to watch dance. Today she would have been happy. Every time we have a screening of our music and dance shows, we have audiences sharing photos of themselves – at their homes, with their kids watching an Indian classical music or a dance show. Online surely has helped us reach out better. It has created a new performance venue for us. Both to perform and to experience… With opportunity comes the necessity of focussed research and planning so that the presentations do justice to the art and the artiste. And with that also comes the topic of sustainability. I know NCPA and all organisations who ticket their shows have put in a lot of effort in creating this habit of paying for good art. With a lot of content now being shared for free, though a beautiful way of reaching out in such tragic conditions but with it is also a growing concern of losing the habit of paying for the arts. This contribution is important. Though in most cases box office collection for the classical arts barely cover the expenses of putting up the show but this participation from the audience in acknowledging the efforts and years of hard work by the artistes are important. It is important to that young kid sitting with her parents watching Indian classical dance with a paid subscription to believe in the talent that she has. A confirmation that her dancing talent matters to the world as much as her skills in solving trigonometry. So what kind of content then should be free online? It’s tough to answer this. Probably something which can’t be recreated or has been extensively performed (and some investment has been recovered). I feel new content (unless supporting a cause) should be reserved for the special person who gives us the respect of creation with subscription.
